President. if we give agriculture a square deal we can soon develop a movement of "back to the farm." Mr. President. of the 3.500.000 men out of employment today. it is estimated that a million of these are floaters. and would not work if they were given the opportunity. No doubt that is true. but with 2.500.000 men out of employment that would work if they were given an opportunity. and with a million young men and women reaching maturity each year. many of whom must find employment in the different trades and lines of business. and with our ports still open to immigration. though somewhat restricted. as I see it. our problems of government in the future are going to be very much greater than they have been in the past. Realizing that there was no longer any opportunity to relieve the congested condition of our cities by our people finding new homes on our public domain. I called upon the Secretary of Labor and the Commissioner of Labor Statistics. with tie hope that I might find some encouragement in discussing with them the question of our unemployment and the conditions that surround our great industries.
