Not a single official. other than the assistant secretary and his private secretary. is authorized in this proposed law. so that If additional employees and positions are created in the Department of Labor. it will necessitate an act of Congress. and could not be brought about unless the committee. of which the gentleman from Illinois is chairman. is convinced of the. necessity for these additional employees and because of the work of the department. The gentleman from Texas [Mr. Box] and the gentleman from California pointed out the danger of the immigration law being broken down because of pressure and Influence. This might be possible. because of the tremendous pressure of work in the department. rendering it impossible to give proper consideration to the many cases brought before the board of review. The Secretary of Labor has pointed out the great number of Members of Congress. both of the Senate and House. who have interested themselves in the many cases brought before him. so that if there is any undue influence being brought to bear in behalf of excluded aliens. we are all contributing to the breaking down of the law. fowever.
