Session #67 · 1921–23

Speech #670195684

Chairman. when I appeal here for the proper consideration of Anrerica. American customs. ideals. and institutions. and respect for and obedience to our Constitution and the statutes we solemnly enact. I have in mind as part of this Nation our immigrant citizens as well as the native born. Those who have come here and assumed the responsibilities of American citizenship and have become a part of the social. commercial. and industrial life of our country are entitled to equal protection of its laws and the full enjoyment of all its privileges. I stand for that. But in the interest of all and for the good of all we must adhere to the policy of restricted immigration. whatever the results may be to foreign countries or their inhabitants. This question is beyond the field of politics. and about which there should be no room for division and partisanship. There are today 700.000 veteranis of the late war out of employment and in distress.
