I have read a good many very interesting articles on this question of immigration. and the consensus ofopinion is. I believe. that these difficulties of which the gentleman complains will never be remedied until we can put up the bars on the other side. It seems to me some effort ought to be made by the department here to have an understanding with the foreign countries so that that difficulty will be remedied. because it is surely in the interest of the poor immigrants who come here. and it is undoubtedly the cause of our weakening. very much and putting the bars down to let them in.
