Session #67 · 1921–23

Speech #670055708

In consideration of this. the Fordney tariff bill. I wish to say that I have implicit confidence in the patriotism of this committee and also the Members of Congress in favor of giving the country an equitable tariff law. I know that their desire is to keep in mind at all times the standard of living in this country. in comparison with the pauper labor of the Old World. In offering this amendment to the cotton schedule placing lint cotton on the protected list at 20 per cent ad valorem. I do this in view of the fact that the Underwood tariff placed all agricultural products on the free list. and agriculture. as we all know. is the foundation of all wealth.
