The medical profession as well as the public health officers are really very luch alarmed at the state of alfairs there. Every now and tIhen they have to unload 2.000 immigrants froim one ship. and they have only beds for 1.200. and only then can they use the 1.200 beds at the quarantine station if the 1.200 are equally divided as to sex. They want beds for 2.000. The present barracks are utterly inadequate. because. as every Senator knows. there are some occasions when six or seven or eight imligrantcarrying ships. with from 35.000 to 20.000 inmmigrants. come into New York Harbor in one day. To have barracks ashore for the immigrants who have been in contact with typhus or stmllpox capable of taking care of only 1.200 means that they have to hold ships in the bay and keep all those inligrants uddlied together on the ships. Under such circumstances it is perfectly hopeless to try to keep them away from contact with any considerable number of their fellows who may be infected with contagious -diseases. Indeed. I think a case occurred at Boston where they had to hIoldi a ship which was full of immigrants for 21 days.
