Session #67 · 1921–23

Speech #670011180

I shall not object. but probably I should. It seems we all should object to granting citizenship by act of Congress. The courts are open and a liberal law regarding naturalization is now on the statute books. The courts have opportunity and time to spin out the oblique threads. While I shall not object to the joint resolution in which my friend the Senator from New York is interested. I believe this is a bad precedent to set.. affd that we ought not further to grant citizenship through Congress. The applicant should take his place in the courts of the country and prove to the satisfaction of the judge that he has complied with the law and is worthy of citizenship.
