Session #67 · 1921–23

Speech #670005314

That is not bothering me right now. There have been some who have objected to the law that is on the statute books. but some people have a mania for kicking. They have been objecting to everything for the last few years. and they think they ought to do so now. As anatter of fact. the very law that they are contending against was passed by almost a unanimous vote upon both sides of the House. and that is the passport law. one of the best pieces of legislation that our friends placed upon the statute books last session with the help of Members upon this side for the purpose of regulating to some extent. at least. the question of immigration to this country. Now. by what possille method of reasoning can a man who is a resident of this country and who came here at his own volition and became naturalized under our laws. as a question of justice or humanity. if you please. demand that- Iis brothers. all of them. should come to this country? .What method of reasoning can any man present that. because a man has come to this country and has sought its privileges. lie can of right demand that his sister should come to this country. and that we are unjust to the peoples of the world if we do not put down the bars and permit to come here all the brothers and all the sisters of the people that may have come to this country and who live here. and that we are unjust if we do not?
