Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660341978

We are glad to welcome others who will come with us and be absorbed with us and be like us. and that is one reason why we have selected the census of 1910. We may have made a mistake in selecting that census. but it can not be much of a mistake in any event. and if it Is a mistake at all we shall have 15 months in which to find It out. And why should gentlemen who are opposed to any restriction of immigration stand up here and object to such a liberal provision as will allow upward of 40.000 from Italy? Why should gentlemen who do not entirely agree with my view stand up here and object to applying the same percentage rates to people from Germany and Austria. countries which have given us some of our best citizens in the past? We shall soon be formally as well as actually at peace. and we should not then discriminate against those countries.
