Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660302563

The Senator may be right in his statement of the Secretarys findings. but my recollection is that the decision did not go that far. but if the Secretary of Labor did acquit Mr. Martens and his staff of activity in the United States hostile to the peace and order of our Government. lie closed his eyes to the facts. and condoned conduct which ought to have brought from him condemnnation. In my opinion the Department of Labor. in its administration of the law for the deportation of aliens. declined to deport persons who violated the law. and whose conduct called for their deportation. but I acquit Mr. Caminetti. the Commissioner of Immigration. of being privy to this policy. Reference has been imade to the Attorney General. Speaking for myself.
