Not long ago I presented an amendment which the committee did not accept. an amendment which would provide for the admission of farm laborers during the period of exclusion provided for in this bill. provided they came here as farm laborers. to go back when the work was over. Section 7. the section we are considering now. provides that farm laborers can come here from Canada. Newfoundland. the Republic of Cuba. afnd the Republic of Mexico under such limitations as the Commissioner General of Immigration. with the approval of the Secretary of Labor. may impose for a period not to exceed six months. In other words. under the bill as drawn. laborers for the fruit orchards of the Northwest and for the lumber mills of the Northwest can come over here. but farm laborers who want to work in Illinois and Iowa can not come. Under the bill as drawn now.
