If this is to accomplish the purpose which the proponents claim. it must to a very large degree close the doors and allow this country tilne to adjust itself to the aliens within our borders. to show them the heart and spirit and purpose of Anerica. to make Aiericansof them as far as their temperament and character make possible. I have nothing against aliens as such. My own father was an immigrant. who came to this great land of freedom and opportunity nearly 50 years ago. not so much to escape something on the other side. but chiefly because America called to him with an irresistible call. as it has to so many other millions of Europes best blood. But. gentlemen. America needs to be protected now against too great an influx of those who do not and can not appreciate our country and her institutions and whom we can not assimilate by any process.
