Speech #660243346

That sum is needed. A similar stint is needed for the protection of the Canadian border. Yet out of this total sum comes the payment of all of tile immigrant inspectors we have. At the port of New York 85 per cent of all tihe immigrants conic in. and. in my opinion. there is at that port an entirely insufficient and underpaid number of inspectors. Wlien an inspector quits in any port of the country it is almost impossible to till his place. Inspectors must be men of high character. they have to be men with some understanding of the inmigrationu laws. Further. the public is misunderstanding the whole deportation procedure. You will find the cry put up that men are being railroaded out of the country. and that cry is based upon the belief by people that every man held for deportation is entitled to a trial by jury. a full court trial. That is not the law at all. Ife is entitled to a hearing before the inspector.
