Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660162052

As stated before in my remarks. they have established in practically 3.000 communities these schools for the education of foreigners. If this amendment should be adopted. it would give them more money to operate on. It would allow them to place this literature in the hands of every person. irrespective of whether he wanted to be naturalized or not. It woult give them the use of the motion pictures also. If the Senators on the Republican side of this Chamber really want to practice some economy and really desire to Americanize somebody in this country. they have an opportunity- here. I noticed in the mornings newspaper that the steerng committee of the other House have lopped off a million dollars. I believe. fron the appropriation for the enforcement of the prohibition law in the deficiency bill just reported by the Appropriations Committee of the other House. Let me call the attention of the Senate. in discussing this proposition. to the fact thatin the sundry civil bill at the first session since the other side came into control the department requested $2.900.000 to enforce the immigration laws. and in the following deficiency bill they requsted $300.000. totaling $3.200.000. They were allowed $2.600.000. lopping off. $600.000 from the important work of enforcing the immigration laws of this country. For the deportation of aliens $350.000 was requgsted. and to enforce the alienenenly act $600.000 was requested by the department and the committee and the Congress disallowed the whole anmount and gave thein nothing in the deticienty act. In the next deficiency bill $150.000 was requested for deportation and $100.000 was given.
