Apr. 22.] Americanization of those Americans who are not Americans but who come here for the purpose of making It their adopted home is a matter which is receiving serous unofficial consideration. Officially the House Committee on Education reported favorably the SmithBankhead bill. which alms to reduce Illiteracy to the minimum. The only logical way to stamp out illiteracy Is by compulsory education. Compulsion means that all laws to accomplish it shall be enforced. instead of being merely winked at. as is the case with so many of our laws. The accomplishment of the end soughtAmericanization and the elimination of illiteracylies in compulsory education laws enforced. not evaded. and the stopping of concentration and colonization of the foreign born.
