Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660144101

I heartily indorse the purposes andprovisions of this bill. My only objection is that such. legislation has been too long delayed. Our laws for the exclusion and deportation of aliens have been wholly inetricient. Since the establislitment of this Government we lave been exceedingly liberal in the admission of foreigners. and it is now seen by all Americans that advantage has been taken of this privilege and that it is working great injury to America and its institutions. We never fully realized the dangers incident to such a policy until drlrtng the recent war. when we awoke to the fact that there were millions within our own borders who vere givIng aid and comfort to the enemy. or were sympathetic with the enemy. and ready and anxious to aid it at every opportunity.
