Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660118804

President. I thought the time had arrived whets the newspapers of the country would cease publishing such rot. How easy it is for any newspaper to send 4 representative to the Bureau of Immigration and find out just the number of Inigrants entering the United States going to the State of Utah for any year in the past. aind also to find out the professions and occupations of the immigrants. and the different classifications of each as provided by the departlsent. If the newspaper doing so wants to publish the truth it would never publish such statements as I have just read. I went to the department. upon liy attention being called to the newspaper article. and asked for a statenent .of. the number of imnigrants for Utah for the years of 1.917. 1918. and 1919. The statistics taken fromn the annual report of the Coinis.sioler General of Immigration show some interesting facts. I have -taken the Stat of Utah and conpared it with the Stlte of Colorado and the following is. the result: Utahs. Colorado. Profession. 1917 1918 1919 1917 1918 1919 Professional ................................ 6 8 (I) 33 19 (1) Skilled laborers .............................. 96 49 () 98 43 () Miscellaneous occupations ................... 501 202 (I. 448 185 (1) No occupation (including women and children)........................ :......... 362 254 () 398 326 () Grand total of all immigrants .......... | 95 513 588 977 573 738 Total of immigrants from England .... 118 48 (1) 136 56 (1) Figures not available. lhealove table slloWs thait Ilic total nutlber of iiinligrants .with no occipationincluig wouien aid chihllrengoing to Utah Wts smaller oil a percentslge basis than the saine class going to Colorado. Mr. lresident. the Commerci: Clnb of Salt Lake City. the leading lusiness club of tile State of Utah. upon seeing this scurrilhls article against the Mormnon Church published throughont the United States. prepared and issued a statement. dated Novenlber 4. 1919. entitled "Refutation issued by tile bot.d of governors of the Commercial Club of Salt Lake City." which 1 desire io read. as follows: Novr I.mnio 4. 1919.
