Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660050332

President. no onecan read the bill without observing that no autocratic overseer of cducation. is created in Washington. It will also readily be seen that the bill in no way interferes with the right of a parent to place his child in a private school or religious denominational school if he sees fit to do so. The bill seeks to aid the States in fighting illiteracy. in teaching the English language to immigrants. in strengthening the schools by adding to the pay of teachers. and by contributing toward the better preparation of teachers for their work. Tile charge tllat it banishes God from the schoolroom and that it is an assault upon religion will be tolerated only by one who opposes public education conducted by the State or local authorities. and who opposes all schools. except denominational and parochial schools. Let us consider the bill somewhat in detail.
