Session #65 · 1917–19

Speech #650279995

I know that the provision is made by the enators amendment in general language. that whenever these Governmeats or these countries do enter into treaty engagements with this Government on the subject. then those engagements shall be carried out. but I know months. more than a year indeed. has passed. and still we have no treaties. Unless we have a treaty I think the question ought to be dealt with. and dealt with effectually. I am willing. if I must do it. that the Committee on Immigration shall go just as far as its power and jurisdiction .extend in dealing with this subject in the same manner that the House of Representatives has already dealt with it. but I think it is infinitely preferable. if it can be done. that it be worked out from the other standpoint. If that can be done. anti if the Senator from Oregon wants to do it. I am perfectly willing to have this bill withdrawn from the Committee on Immigration and referred to his committee.
