Tile Second Census. taken In 1800. was an extension of the first. in that it gave Information as to age distribittion of the free white element of the population. and in that the distributioll age was made to apply to fenales as well as to males. But -even this extension did not meet the demands of the most thoughtful and reflective of those times. Previous to the enactient :of the law governing that census two. of the leading iterary societies of America. the Connecticut Academy of Arts e and Sciences. presided over by Timothy Dwight as Its president. ilnd the AmericaTi Philosophical Society. presided over by Thomas Jdfferson as Its president. petitioned Congress and sugg tested that inqfiry be made as to the number of births. the num11l1ber of persons by sex in each of the various specified age groups. lthe number of native and foreign born citizens and of g aliens. the number of persons in each of certain classes of f ocelitions. :and the ninliber of married. single. and widowed s persons. d "Tihe Third -Census. taken Ih 1810. attempted to gather linduse trial statistics.
