Stahlutun was not an alien eneuy and required to register under the procaination of the President. hut a duly naturalized Anterican citizen. and have seen the correspondeice between him and Mr. Canpen. and niy colleague has stated them correctly. Maj. Stalilnian cante to the city of Washington on husiness of a public nuature just previous to the tiite .alien enemies were required to he registered. Whilc here he told ile that his status as a citizen was being agitated anti inisriepresented by some parties in Nashville. and ruliiitteI to tile the facts ill regard to is birth. emigration to \Vest Virginia. then a part of Vigilnia. with his father and ntothe. the subsequent ieath .of his father. the lninarriage of his mother. and the suls.quentliaturalization of his stepfatlier. MT. Harnish. while he --was yet a minor. and a certified copy of the record of the naturalization of Mr. Harnish. I had no doubt. upon the facts given me. but that he was an American citizen. but suggested to him that the.best way to have the matter settled and forestall all efforts to harass him was to submit the facts to the Department of Justice and have his status finally determined. He believed lie was a duly naturalized American citizen and was conscious of his loyalty to our Government and did not want to be misrepresented. I had him then make out a statement of the facts not appearing of record and transmitted them to the Department of Justice with a request for an opinion upon them. That statement was made in my office here in Washington. in the absence of papers and family records of Maj. Stahliman. The Attorney General wis of the opinion. as stated in the letter read by Senator McKELLAR. that upon those facts Maj. Stahiman was a duly naturalized American citizen.. and not an alien enemy. Immediately after Maj. Stahlman. went home. which was in a few days. he wrote me that there were some inaccuracies in dIates and names in the statement he had prepared in my office. and which I had transmitted to the Department of Justice. find inclosed a corrected statement which. upon his request.
