Session #65 · 1917–19

Speech #650234271

I will state to the gentleman that that was another amendhment of the Senate that the conferees would not agree to. The Senate llad in their bill thatHereafter. subject to the provisions of subdivision 11 of this act. no citizen or subject of any (ouutry which by law permits its citizens or subjects to retain their citizenship or allegiance in such country after l)eing naturalized in another country shall be eligible for naturalization in the United States. Now. I desire to say. Mr. Speaker. I was considerably in symnpathy with that proposition. but the committee. I believe. except myself. thought that was a question of restriction more than anything else. and ought to be considered later on. when the -question of whether we would admit people who were by their laws debarred from becoming citizens of this country was being considered.
