Session #65 · 1917–19

Speech #650169684

I think I know from whence comes the voice asking for its passage. and it is no credit to them and less credit to us if we do not sit down carefully and analyze the situation and take that firm stand our judgment leads us to. Now. let us see as to one or two things. In the first section of the bill it says that any alien eligible under existing law to become a citizen. who does not enter the United States Army but asks to be exempt or for whom some one else asks exemption is to be deported and never can become a citizen of the United States. Now. take some cases. and there are hundreds of them. Here is a Greek. an Italian. an Englishman. an Irishman. if you please. who is here in this country. of military age. and who is willing to fight.
