FirSt. in their local union . second. in the central labor unioi. third. in the State union . fourth. in some national or international organization. -ind. fifth. in some cases in such organizations as "personal liberty leagues" and "Imutual benefit societies." - Mr. Stelzel has shown that only 15.000 persons in the whole country are engaged in occupations. peculiar to the liquor industry. such as brewers. malsters. distillers. and rectifiers. the remaining threefourtlhs of the whole are carpenters. electricians. machinists. teamsters. and others for whose labor there would be immediate demand to take the place of those who are going into the Army and to make up for the shortage in immigratioi. The total number employed in the manufacture of liquor. even in the related trades last named. is 62.920. Nodoubt many workingmen have been alarmedby the industrious agents of. the liquor traffic as to losing their jobs. and very likely many have been willing to sign petitions out of sympathy for labor unibns connected with. the liquor business because of the brotherhood very naturally felt among labor unions. but we may sympathize with this solicitude without accepting its wisdom or the validity of the grounds upon which it is based.
