Speech #650022176

President. I am satisfied the people of the countryat least if I may speak from conditions which prevail in my own Stateare exerting every effort to get under cultivation the largest possible acreage of ground. but a great problem confrosts us. and that is the probleln of providing labor forthe proper eultivation and harvesting of these great crops. A citizen of my State called upon me today and seriously proposed that we suspend the operation of our immigration laws. so as to permit the introduetion into the country of 250.000 Chinese to work upon the farms anld in related industries in this country. Mr. President. this condition of affairs. to my ilnind. demonstraies the wisdom and the statesmanship of the President of the United States in his action in vetoing the immigration bill passed at the last session of Congress. excluding from our shores Caucasians. who would fill this great want for labor. btecause they could not read or write. I regret that the chairmm of the Committee on Immigration is not here. He liight be moved possibly by these consider"ations to endeavor to procure Congress to suspend the operation of tlint provision of tile immigration law. at least for the period of the war. But. Mr.
