Speech #640310504

During the period to which I have referred they entered tile service of the State at the request of the General Govermnent. [These men not only fought Indians who were attacking seitlements. iut they rescued the property of the Governient of the United States. In one instance they rescued some soldiers of the United States. They protected the tnil of the United States. the wagon trains of the emigrants and freighters. and no body of ilen in an isolated part of the country ever rendered more niagnanimous. more courageous. more selfsacrificing service than did those men. There are few of them left. and many of those who are left are in the greatest need. and to grant them a few dollars in their declining years would be an act of justice and mercy. The remoteness from the seat of the Governuent and the great struggle in which it was then involved caused them not to be. formally made a part of the enlisted troops of tile United States.
