Last fall. during the political campaign. the Bureau of Naturalization invited those who had recently been made citizens at Chicago. those who were applying for citizenship at Chicago. to come to a great meeting to hear the President of the United States address them. They gathered in large crowds and listened to the President. It was inevitable that men who were applying for citizenship. who had filed their first papers. who had to pass through the Bureau of Naturalization before they could get their second papers. would respond to a demand of that kind. but it was so perfectly patent that it was a political trick that while the naturalized citizens attended the meeting and listened to the President they felt so resentful of the departments action. of their attempt to use thei.. that they voted the Republican ticket and refused to vote for the President.
