Following the vast Irish imnligration came that of thi Germans. vaster still. Until some thirty or forty years ago our principal supply o immigrants came from Germany. When the present war began. the great stream of German immigrants had dwindled almost to the vanishing point. What was the reason for this shrinkage? It is clear that it was ecause the great industrial awakening of Germanyone of the most astoullng phenomena of modern timesgave employment at home to hundreds of thousands at higher wages In new kinds of work.
