President. I move to reconsider the vote whereby tile Senate agreed to the committee amendment on page 49. line 16. with a view of afterwards moving to restore the language of the House bill. Permit me to state that the language in section 22 as passed by the other House is as follows: That whenever an alien shall have been naturalized or shall have taken up his permanent residence In this country and shall have filed his declaration of Intention to become a citizen. and tliereafter shall send for his wife or minor children to join himThey- shall be permitted to land. provided that they are not afflicted with contagious sickness. The Senate committee has recommended that the words " taken up his permanent residence in this country and shall have filed his declaration of intention to become a citizen" be stricken out. and that there be substituted instead the words " resided in the United States for seven consecutive years." Section 37 of the present Immigration act. now existing. gives the right to an alien resident of this country who shall have taken up his permanent residence here ind shall have filed his declaration of intention to become a citizen. The language of tile present law alld the language adopted by the House has been stricken out by the Senate on the recommendation of the committee. and it now allows any alien resident of the United States for seven years to send for his wife and children. As the law now stands. and as the House recommended in this bill.
