American homogeneous populatlonf He does not hesitate. I iam sure. when there is a 4crisis toiuse langu:age and advocate measures Which might well cause irrif tation.- but in- this instanee the greater duty of protecting~bur ? country has appealed. most to him. This. might. becalledi an: act s of selfpreservation.. and. le understands as well. as: I under stand... that unlessk in some way we restrain: these people there=is e very great danger Of the population- on:the western coast---and e. thatj is only. the. beginning--being supbrsedbdl by populations r. from the Asiatic nations. That is the whole question They have the ability to comein and take the place of our native population. and they hfve already done so in a conspicuous case In Vaca Valley. Cal.. our most productive valley. where they have excluded by their presence our white pogulation and driven them off the land. The Senator from Massachusetts introduced a resolution in this body which bears his namethe Lodge resolutionwhich declared In terms that the United States would regard as an unfriendly act the acquisition of land by Japanese whether in person or in the name of corporations. foreign or otherwise. on the Mexican coast. which is foreign territory. and that resolution was adopted by this body. That might well have excited the hostility of Japan. but unless we respect ourselves. we can not be respected by them. We are selfrespecting. and without equivocation we say we do not desire this immigration. just as the Lodge amendment said we will not tolerate the purchase of land by Japanese upon the Mexican.coast. Should our Yankee population a hundred years from now. having filled their own territory. seek entrance into Japan for the purpose of finding employment there. the Japanese might well object to the Yankee invasion. With their cleverness and their inventive genius let us assume they would soon destroy the native Japanese population. and the Japanese would be justified by every right. legal and moral.
