During the period of 11 years. 18991909. we admitted 7.199.060 aliens over 14 years of age. Of the Scandinavians. only fourtenths of 1 per cent were illiterate. of the Scotch only seventenths of 1 per cent. of the English only 1.1 per cent. of the Welsh only 2 per cent. of the Irish only 2.7 per cent. of the Dutch 4.7 per cent. of the Gernmans 5.4 per cent. of the French 5.4 per cent. Those countries represent the "old immigration." In the countries representing the " new immigration" the degree of illiteracy was as follows: Southern Italy. 54.2 per cent. Polish. 35.4 per cent. Hebrew. 25.7 per cent.
