Session #64 · 1915–17

Speech #640134824

Mr. Chairman. this has been a very interesting de0bate. I never thought I would live to see the day when a Republican from Pennsylvania in the American House of Representatives would insist that the socalled "highpriced " labor of the United States could undersell the socalled "pauper" labor of Eur6peaa and Asiatic countries. And yet one of the gentlemen from Pennsylvania assured its today that the Bethlehem Steel Co. and the Carnegie Steel Co. and various other companies were selling armor plate to the United States Governmeat forless than the Governments of Asia and Europe were paying for the same kind of armor plate. and the gentleman (lid not deny that those coheerns made money out of the transaction. Now. my friends. unfortunately the facts do not entirely bear out the contention of the gentlemen.
