Speech #640073073

Now. the gentleman will recall the case of a man who shipped on a .ship and signed to be paid 50 cents for the round tripobviously shipped foi" the purpose of getting into the United States. Now. under the law as it was at that time his consul could pick him up for desertion. but under the La Follette Act. comblued with this act. if that particular man leaves that particulmr ship when it arrives in the harbor of New York. he simply breaks a contract. and the consul has no right to pick him up. It may be true. if the immigration officials find him in the United States. they can deport him as a person unlawfully in the country. but he is not subject to examination. he has the right to get off the ship. and if he simply makes up his mind lie will not go back to the ship he is here. I would like to ask the gentleman what part of my statement is incorrect?
