Session #64 · 1915–17

Speech #640072818

Then I was going to inquire who made the- selections of the people to be detailed. I will say to the gentleman that in my own district there are two places that receive most of the immigrants. One is on the Canadian border. where the. transcontinental lifes cross from Canada to Minnesota. The other is at the city of Duluth. where the steamboat lines coming from the Canadian ports bring down the immigrants. There are commissioners of the Public Health Service at both places making the proper inspection. Now. I have never been able to. find out just how those men are. employed. and under whose direction they are. They appear to be- under direction of the Chief of the Public Health Service. If it is the purpose of this bill that these men shall inspect these immigrants. and that the Secretary of Labor can send them to Winnipeg or Quebec. I would lik6 to know it. Then there is. another and an additional thing that I want to inquire about.
