Session #64 · 1915–17

Speech #640069790

It Will help protect American workingmen in their wages and theirconditions 0f living. It is in harmony with the principles for which the Republican Party has always stood. and therefore I am for it. The Republican platform of 1912 contained this provision: We pledge the Republican Party to the enactment of appropriate laws to give relief from the constantly growing evil of induced or undesirable immigration which Is inimical to the progress and welfare of the people of the United States. It is only the evil of "induced" or " undesirable" immigration that this bill seeks to provide against. And I confess I am unable to understand the attitude of those few Republicans here who are opposed to this bill. We have always believed in the policy of protecting American labor from the competition of the cheaper labor of foreign countries by a protective tariff.
