Speech #640069790

A great many fanciful and farfetched reasons. it seems t me. have been advanced both for and against it. If I understand it. it is. after all. but a measure of protection. It. of course. revises and amends the general immigration laws. but its ultimate purpose is to protect. so far as can be done. American society from the corrupting and disintegrating influences that would follow the movement of the prohibited classes to our shoresto protect. as far as can be done. the standard of wages and the standard of living of American workingmen from the injurious competition of the ignorant and undesirable hordes of immigrants that will want to come here. I am in favor of such protection. and therefore will vote for the bill. This bill.
