Session #64 · 1915–17

Speech #640068633

Chairman. I am pleased that I can agree with the chairman of the comumittee on this proposition. I am op-. posed to the amenaflient and I think it should not prevail. .1 vish to state that I always have been and am now against induced immmigratioi. and for that reason I assisted in having. this section strengthened so that it will be impossible for any-. one to bring in contract labor or induce immigration to the United States. though it might be brought in by some States that may desire to advertise for it.. I think that tends to show that the oftrepeated statement on the part of the chairman of the committee that the literacy test is the only restrictive pro-. visions in the bill is erroneous. We have in this bill a great many other provisions which ire restrictive. This is one of. them.
