Session #64 · 1915–17

Speech #640066311

The gentleman from Illinois said there were very few people in this country who were here and had American names In 1790. That may be true.. and I do not dispute it. He further said that in this country in the Southland they had only 2 per cent of the immigration. because there was servile labor with which the foreigner would have to mingle and upon which an aristocracy looked down. He Is still mistaken in that suggestion. The great majority of the white people in the South make their living by the sweat of their brow. and character is the standard of society instead of wealth or where a man might come from.
