Session #64 · 1915–17

Speech #640066194

Their descendants are not ashamed of these ancestors. They have no reason to be ashamed of their ancestors. But if there had been a literacy test in those days they never would have been allowed to land. They were illiterate because the opportunity to learn reading and writing had been denied tiem. Strike the literacy test from this bill. and I feel that almost every Member of the House will be willing to vote for it. But. Mr. Chairman. the literacy test is no test of character. There are in the United States today thousands of young men who sprung from Irish immigrants. They constitute much of the bone and sinew of the land. They make splendid citizens.
