After computing the 50 miles which is the length of the canal from Colon to Panama. it is only 4.670 miles from Baltimore to Valparaiso. while it is 5.140 miles from San Francisco to the same place. Baltimore is also closer than any of the big Atlantic seaports to the South American cities on the east coast. This amendment would. as I have said. strike down the appropriation for the building of that Immigration station. which is most important to the handling of immigration at this port. For these and many other reasons I am opposed to its adoption. Mr.
