Speech #630424245

Speaker. I am convinced that my action is in the interest of the American laboring man. For 20 years. as has been stated. immigrants have come here in large numbers. larger than in the entire 80 years preceding. and I want to say to you that within the last 20 years. notwithstanding the large immigration. the conditions of the laboring man during that time have improved. Not only have the living conditions improved. but the wages of the American laboring man have increased. Twenty years ago. or in the year 1890. the yearly average earning of the American laboring man amounted to about $335. and the average earning of the American laboring man today is over $550.
