Speaker. I am glad of the opportunity to express my sentiments. which will be subjective. rather than objective. I am the son of an immigrant. My father came to this country and he could only write his name. He was as sturdy and as honest a citizen and as useful a citizen as any man that I know of. and I. his humble son. will say. without egotism. that I have. in my humble way. done more for the general mass of the people to reduce the cost of living by championing fair and equitable transportation rates than I dare say any other man on the floor of this House [applause]. because I have for twentyodd years devoted myself to the subject of transportation. the currency of which everybody knows. or. rather. ought to know. is paramount to the currency of money in the development of our country. I am surprised that you want to come here and legislate against a man who can not write because of the literacy test. Why do you not keep out the European goods? Why do you let them come in here at a less rate than is charged to transport domestic goods from Interior points?
