Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630423914

I have called attention to thestatistics compiled by the Government which show that for the decades preceding this the percentage of foreign born who went into the country was about 17. and that the percentage has risen in the last decade to 24. The truth is the same law that drives the boy born on the farm to the .city keeps the foreigner from going to the farm. If conditions in the city are so much better than they are on the farm that the boy born on the farm will insist on going to the city. then. of course. the conditions do not permit the man who is born in the city or immigrates to this country to go to the farm. fThat is all there is to it. Whenever labor becomes better paid upon- the farm than in the city. whenever prices for farm products have risen so that farming is more profitable than other occupations. the immigrants will nearly all go to the farm. just as did your ancestors and mine. I desire to put in these figures. I was calling attention to the increased use of farm machinery.
