Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630381138

No one who favors this amendment has even suggested that the door should be open to the admission of the Jews because they are Jews. or open it to the admission of any other race of people because they belong to a given race. No such proposition has been maiqde and no such idea is entertained. The Senator speaks of persecutions directed against the Individual immigrant where the persecution is for religious reasons.- Mr. President. that part of the bill as it is written. exempting those seeking admission because of religious persecution. says nothing about requiring an immigrant to show that -he has been the victim of a special and peculiarly peisohal attack. Such a thing as that would rarely happen. The bill has no such limitation as that.
