Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630379342

Under this provision there would be no difficulty whatever in all the Armenians and all the Turks getting into this country. because they had persecuted each other. I call the attention of the Senator in charge of the bill to the particular wording on page 9. It is in reality just as broad as tlms language. for it provides thatAll aliens who shall prove to the satisfaction of the proper immigratien oflicer orto the Secretary of Labor that they emigrated from the counly of which they were last permanent residents solely for the purpose of escaping from religious persecution. All those can come in under the bill as it is now presented to .the Senate. It seems as though the committee had adopted the word Jewish. for instance. in another instance as meaning a nationality. and not a religion.
