As the Senator has just read. they have up to this timne been compelled to spend nearly onethird of their entire official existence in preparing thesiselves to reatch the point of getting ready to hold public hearings. but lay recollection is that they have had some such heairings. I think I have seen staitements to that effect. If these men are expert and intelligent on the mass of subjects imposed upon them to be Investigated. they will examine the sources of informtition and the results of other Investigations till over the worldthose in out insular possessions as to Asiatic immigration. those In foreign countries as to the relations of labor and capital. those ii- this country as to sanitary conditions in places of production: protection to life aind health in our mills and factories. child abor find such questions. tany one of which would take any body of men a considerable time to investigate both as to the facts and the existing conditions. and then as to the causes. find then as to the best remedies to be applied. and of course It is a nmonumental work. It is ti work such that the Senator from Utah. being familiar with the work of the British Royal Commission. predicts that this commission will have to ask for an extension of time to complete. or very likely its previous efforts and the money the Govertinent has spent upon It will be brought to no valuable or informing conclusion. and hence will be wasted. I ali not a business man. but if I were in business and had tiny kind of work like this to perform. and hid to pay for it myself. or was acting for people. or employed by people. to expend their money for them where it would produce thc best results. it sents to lie I womld want to know before I appropriated either $50.000 or $2(10.000 whether it was my intention to extend the life of this agency that I had constituted. or whether I wtis going to cut them off in their prime. and whether I had talso some other agency that was now doing a pirt of the saute work that I was paying this tgency for doing.
