Tile gentlenlian has full informiation on the matter. or lie can ol)tain it from the record of the Committee oil Appropriations. and lie can obtain it from the Bureau of Immigration. The mlisfortune about this item is that if the conmnittee had had the full information before it undoubtedly it would have given the $210.000 additioli for this work. and the Comnlissioner General (f Imigration realizes now that instead of holding so close to his oflice and writing some decision and looking over inlportant matters oil his tiles he should have conic personally before the comlmittee oil this ilmiportant sul)ject. as lie told ile yesterday. and says it never will occur again. But this does not justify tile refusal of the appropriation. These people under hin are good young fellows. but they have not had the experience and do not unde.-stand tile situation as does the Commissioner General as to all these important subjects involvIng immigration. and so forth. and tile enforcement of the laws oil all of these subjects. Now. we are not taking anything out of the Treasury. we are taking no mioney from anybody that has been paid il. This Government. ill its small charge to those who come into the country. is paying many times the entire expense of the whole Imigration Service. and sufficient money should be appropriated to carry the service with a full force so all the work call be done and t1e laws fully and properly enforced.
