Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630224697

I think this country owes a debt of gratitude to the distinguished chairman of the Committee on the Merchant Marine and Fisheries. Judge ALEXANDER. on account of the fact that he has kept the seamens bill in committee and is still considering it and having changes made in it from what it was when it came over to the House. The seamens bill. if it were passed as it came from the Senate. would largely destroy the shipping interests of this country. and would benefit no one except a few socalled sailors who do not think enough of this country to become naturalized. So far as I am concerned. I have reached a point where I refuse to shed tears for a class of men who do not think enough of this country to become citizens before they come and ask its protection and assistance.
