Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630187512

Have those who propose to carry into effect this repeal considered the commercial advantages which exemption from tolls would afford to American producers in the markets along the Pacific coast? Not long since the party in power enacted what was called a competitive tariff constructed on the theory of providing more extensive markets for the products of American manufacture. Those who differed from that policy then believed that it was a surrender of American markets to the pauper labor of the world. Do you realize the further advantages offered to English and European merchants by this present pioposal of repeal? They certainly realize them. and for this reason Great Britain has continued to press her claim until finally she has succeeded in obtaining the Presidents support and in gagging his adherents in Congress into servile submission.
