Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630169831

It was blowing a lierce gale from the north. with tremendous high and dangerous sea running. We steered as near to the Voltrao as safety would permit. and noticed that twothirds of the ship was burning like a furnace. The after part of the vessel was crowded with people. apparently emigrants. and it was evident that something lid to be done without any delay to save those on board the burning vessel. as the situation was very critical. We endeavored to get a rope connection to the Volturno by means of the Lyle gun. but this proved to be Impossible. Under these circumstances I called for volunteers. and in spite of the fierce gale blowing and the dangerous. high sea running. my appeal met with a most hearty response. and every member of the crew. officers. engineers. sailors. and firemen. as well as waiters. slopped forward.
